MATERIAL BEHAVIOR IN HIGH SPEED IMPACT

Abstract

The report consists of a study of the dynamics of dislocation motion and multiplication based on elastic precursor decay in LiF. In Section 2 plans and progress are described for a direct experimental measurement of the threshold dynamic stress and time for dislocation multiplication in LiF. Section 3 contains theoretical procedures for converting the current output of quartz gauges to stress in materials which produce double shock waves because of dynamic failure or phase transitions. These procedures are used in Section 4 to interpret shock measurements on CdS-lucite mixtures. Section V contains a list of nine papers, talks and reports produced under this contract.
