RESEARCHES ON THE PROPAGATION AND DECAY OF VORTEX RINGS.

Abstract

The propagation of vortex rings in air was studied via stroboscopic photography and hot-wire anemometry. Measurements of vortex time of flight, axial velocity distribution, and geometry were made. Empirical formulas are developed and compared with the existing theories. It is found that the linear momentum of vortex rings is conserved and that the ratio of vortex ring radius to core radius is approximately constant. (Author)
