Spin-Relaxation Studies of Paramagnetic Defects in II-VI Crystals.

Abstract

Spin-lattice relaxation studies were carried out on the substitutional impurities Cr(2+), Co(2+), and Mn(2+) in single crystals of wurtzite cadmium sulphide; on the substitutional impurity Mn(2+) in single crystals of cubic zinc sulphide; and on two paramagnetic centers in a single crystal of wurtzite cadmium sulphide which was enriched in 114Cd. All the crystals except the 114CdS were co-doped with lithium. The results have been interpreted for each case in terms of theoretical models for the defect centers and their interaction with their surroundings. The two centers in 114CdS have been tentatively identified. Calculations of the Jahn-Teller effect and the Ham effect for CdS:Cr(2+) have been performed and the results used to interpret the previously reported ESR properties and the results of the spin-lattice interaction studies reported here. Preliminary investigations of the effect of band-gap irradiation on the spin-relaxation of CdS:Mn(2+) are reported. (Author)
