Injurious Smut (Vledonosnost Golovni),

Abstract

One of the most destructive known plant diseases is smut infection. Smut appears with generally known signs: destruction of ears, destruction of the endosperm and seed bud, and lesions of the stem. Usually losses from smut are figured on the basis of the field calculations of the infected stems and a harvest which approaches zero. Calculation of the development of smut infection is conducted annually in the USSR, simultaneously with field approbates of cereals. By this, is determined the average percent of crop infection by smut according to the relation of the inspected squares in the area, region, or country. According to the mean average percent form the gross yield of grain, is reckoned the losses. The purpose of this report is to determine the total amount of injurious smut through the conducting of special field experiments. Smut infection of wheat and even a single appearance of disease of the ears generates a colossal quantity of chlamudo-spoors capable of infecting many plants. Therefore, it is essential to fight smut even when it is met in only insignificant amounts. (Author)
