Focusing and Leveling of Battery-Powered Shore Lights.

Abstract

Four marine signal lanterns were focused and leveled by ten 'adjusters' in an attempt to determine the focus/level errors that can be expected under field conditions. The angle between the horizon and the center of the beam was measured as an indication of the focus/level errors. The percentage reduction in beam intensity at the horizon was measured relative to the intensity found at the beam center. Statistical analysis of the data is included. Relative merits and deficiencies between the lanterns and focusing procedures are studied.
