Solid State Parametric Pump Source. Design Plan and Reliability Plan.

Abstract

Information pertinent to the development of 42 GHz IMPATT power sources suitable for use as parametric amplifier pumps is given. Discussions of several decision areas are presented in order to arrive at the most desirable approach to the pump system. These decisions were made with consideration for the required power output, frequency stabilization, power level stability, and noise requirements, and were based, as much as possible, on experimental data. The proposed system consists of a stabilized IMPATT oscillator followed by an electronically leveled IMPATT amplifier. A promising back-up system consisting of a thermally controlled IMPATT oscillator is also proposed. The general specifications for the pump source depend heavily on the results of the various analyses and measurements discussed. This is especially so for the noise, power leveling, and frequency stability specifications. (Author)
