Study of Electronic Handling of Mail. Completion Report for Work Task 3. Conversion.

Abstract

The document considers conversion as the essential link between present day postal operations and a future electronic mail handling system. Input and output conversion technologies involved include paper handling, scanning, pattern recognition, recording and printing. Parameters such as speed, capacity, cost, and error rates characterize the conversion process. Output conversion is considered within the state-of-the-art, but as of the present time only a partial solution of the input conversion problem exists, further analysis and development is required. The objectives of the report are to identify all possible means of conversion, the evaluate the relative technical feasibility and cost effectiveness of these means, and to delineate problem areas where further engineering research and development is required.
