A Biochemical Investigation of Chemoreception in Marine Organisms.

Abstract

An initial evaluation was conducted to determine which phyla and species of marine organisms might yield the specific knowledge desired concerning the chemical identity and specificity of the pheromones of marine organisms. It appeared that a detailed study of this phenomena in algae, echinoderms and crustacea would yield knowledge over a wide spectrum of evolutionary development and specialization. Projects were initiated to examine the pheromones of the brown algae, Macrocystus pyrifera, the sea urchin, Strongylocentratus purpuratus, and the crab, Pachygrapsus crassipes. The major effort has been applied to the last of these since this information might be most readily applicable to the Navy's needs. The initial results indicated that the sex pheromone released by female P. crassipes is probably a polar steroid and may be the molting hormone, crustecdysone. (Author)
