On the Errors of Determining the Earth's Potential from Measurements of Gravity on a Given Surface (Ob Oshibkakh Opredeleniya Potentsiala Zemli po Izmereniyam Sily Tyazhesti na Izvestnoi Poverkhnosti),

Abstract

Coefficients C sub nm and S sub nm (n,m less than or equal to 4) of the spherical harmonic expandion of the potential have been derived in terms of the surface characteristics and the gravity distribution. The earth being modeled by two attracting mass points, the values of C sub nm, S sub nm (n, m less than or equal to 4) have been calculated both with the formulae of this method and with the exact ones. The conclusion has been drawn that it is advisable to determine the sectorial harmonics and the tesseral ones with large second indexes from gravity measurements, while the zonal harmonics and the tesseral ones with small second indexes are better determined not from gravity, but from satellite motions.
