Residual Stress Analysis in Plastically Deformed Metals of Low Stacking Fault Energy.

Abstract

Two X-ray diffractometer techniques are used to measure the surface residual stresses and residual stress distributions in cold-rolled alpha-brass (30% Zn). Data obtained by the two-exposure method and the lattice parameter extrapolation method of Wagner et al. are compared with the residual stress distributions suggested by strain-gauge relaxation behaviour. Predominantly tensile surface stresses were measured for deformations up to 50% reduction in thickness and negligibly small stacking fault densities. The causes of various anomalous results are discussed. (Author)
