Base Flow Analysis of an Axisymmetric Body with a Central Jet.
Abstract
A method of predicting the base flow of an axially-symmetric cylindrical vehicle with a single central jet issuing from the base was developed with the application of Korst's two-stream interaction model. Some of the flow variables that can be estimated by this method are the base pressure, the average base gas temperature, and the entrainment rate of the ambient air into the base region. Effects of other variables such as vehicle and nozzle geometry, engine operating conditions, vehicle Mach number and trajectory, gas properties, base mass, and energy bleed can also be investigated systematically. The results obtained by the present method agree well with Thor flight data as well as available wind tunnel data. The method is limited to a case where the mixing layer is fully turbulent and both the external freestream and the central jet stream are supersonic. (Author)
