On Thermal and Mechanical Effects at Sliding Interfaces.
Abstract
Experimental study of wear life of bonded molybdenum disulfide film is described. The effect of substrate roughness, which had been observed earlier, was given special attention in the study. The data provided the background for a theoretical investigation of the substrate roughness effect. Experimental work on the transient viscoelastic properties of polymer liquids is described. Jet viscometry method was used on a series of methyl silicones which ranged in viscosity from 10 to 2,000 cs. The shear ratio ranged from 3000 to 30,000/sec. Finally, an exact solution is obtained for the two-dimensional temperature field under the influence of a fast-moving arbitrarily-distributed heat source. As an application, the result of a thermoelastoplastic yielding problem is given. This bears on the layer problem of fading of brakes and clutches under microelastohydrodynamic conditions. (Author)
