Editing of Radiosonde Angular Data.

Abstract

A procedure is developed for identifying spikes in radiosonde angular data and synthesizing replacement values. The procedure is based upon the assumptions that the mean value function of the data is approximately parabolic locally and that the noise distributions of individual observations are uncorrelated and homoscedastic. A third-order difference operator is then defined which annihilates the mean value function and at the same time propagates spikes into an easily detectable pattern. Statistical tests are developed to determine significant patterns associated with spikes. The computations and tests are designed for incorporation into a digital computer processing routine.
