Mechanical Properties of Ti-6AI-6V-2Sn-3Zr-1Fe-1Cu-0. 1C Alloy.

Abstract

Mechanical properties and microstructures were determined after various heat treatments for three section thicknesses (1-1/8 inch, 5/8 inch, and 3/8 inch) of the Ti-6Al-6V-2Sn-3Zr-1Cu-1Fe-0.1C alloy. The heat treatments producing the best mechanical properties according to military specification MIL-T-46038 consisted of solutionizing for one hour in the temperature range of 1450 F and 1550 F followed by aging for four to eight hours in the temperature range of 1000 F and 1100 F. In general, yield strengths between 200 and 220 ksi and values exceeding 5% elongation, 12% reduction of area, and 5 foot-pounds impact energy at -40 F were obtained with the above heat treatments. Higher strength and lower ductility and impact energy levels were achieved with the higher solution temperature and lower aging temperature of the above ranges. (Author)
