Strain Distribution and Deformation at the Crack Tip in Low Cycle Fatigue.

Abstract

The behavior of the material in the tip region of fatigue cracks in 1100-F Al and 4340-A6 steel was studied. The size of the plastic zone which accompanies the crack and the extent of the strain field which is associated with that plastic zone were observed by chemical etching techniques. As part of the experimental program, a technique was developed for making a cast replica of the fatigue crack by in situ infiltration with plastic. These castings were studied by scanning electron microscopy. (Author)
