Basic Solar Research: The Solar Chromosphere and High Energy Radiation.

Abstract

The report reviews a program directed towards basic research on the physics of the solar atmosphere and the effects of solar radiation on the earth. Continuing aid by ONR has played a significant role in the initiation and development of four general aspects of solar research: (1) Maps and analyses of high dispersion, high resolution solar spectra obtained with the McGregor Vacuum Spectrograph of the McMath-Hulbert Observatory; (2) Studies of solar activity with special emphasis on lambda-sweep spectroheliograms; (3) Research and development leading to improvements in solar instrumentation; (4) Investigations in solar-terrestrial relationships.
