Evaluation of LS-59 Xenon Flashtube Beacon

Abstract

Condenser-discharge beacons capable of operation from battery power supplies on buoys and minor lights offer four distinct advantages over incandescent beacons: increased servicing periods, increased battery life, increased visual effectiveness, and increased 'glow ranges' in fog. The report presents the laboratory and field test results of the LS-59 flashtube beacon, as well as a discussion of the potential use of condenser-discharge burst lights as a future base for a maritime signal lighting system.
