Atmospheric Electric and Lightning Detector.
Abstract
A system has been developed to monitor both the atmospheric potential gradient and also the occurrence of cloud to ground lightning discharges. The instrument consists of an outdoor sensor package and an indoor display unit. The potential gradient measurement is obtained using a conventional field mill which is contained in the sensor package. The lightning detector circuitry consists of a plate antenna and a narrow band ac amplifier which monitors the low frequency components of the electromagnetic signal generated by lightning discharges. A description of the equipment is presented along with an analysis of the various circuit elements. Operating procedures and results from early measurements are included. (Author)
