Determination of Multiaxial Stress Behavior of Solenhofen Limestone and Westerly Granite.

Abstract

The report presents experimental results on two geologic materials, Solenhofen limestone and Westerly granite. Uniaxial, triaxial (to 3 kbars confining pressure) and biaxial stress tests (using tubular specimens) were conducted on the two materials at constant strain rates of 0.0001/sec to 0.1/second. From these tests fracture or yield as a function of mean normal pressure was determined as well as the stress/strain behavior. The work provides an insight into the general criteria of fracture and yielding of geologic materials and serves as a method of checking present material models being used in mathematical calculations involving geologic materials.
