Neurophysiological Mechanisms of the States of Sleep.

Abstract

Research was conducted on the relationship between cerebral monoamines and sleep and waking. This summary of work accomplished covers the following subjects: Occipital and geniculate potentials recorded during eye movements in the unanesthetized cat; Electrophysiological study of monoamines containing neurons of the brain stem; A study of the relationship between monoamines containing neurons of the pons and the ponto geniculo-occipital activity recorded during sleep; Neurophysiological and neuropharmacological studies of sleep in the rat; Alteration of circadian rhythm of brain biogenic amines and sleep independent of light; Neurochemical study of sleep: Serotonin synthesis in insomniac cats.
