Climatological Study of Keweenaw Peninsula.
Abstract
The microclimatological survey conducted in the Keweenaw Peninsula during the 1952-53 winter season indicates that the Calumet-Hancock Airport, Ahmeek Flats, and Brockway Mountain Drive sites are all suitable for the SIPRE field station. The lower winter temperatures at the Calumet-Hancock Airport site combined with the physiographic features and availability of facilities and utilities at this site favor its selection for the Keweenaw Field Station of SIPRE. As it is well centered with respect to the other sites, with good open, all-season highways available, advantage may be taken of the special features exhibited by the other sites if necessary to the accomplihsment of special studies. (Author) The location and elevation contribute to the heavy snowfall. A review of available weather records indicated that the combination of heavy snowfall and low temperatures on the Keweenaw Peninsula were suitable to the requirements of a SIPRE field station.
