A Description and Analysis of the Wollaston Prism Schlieren-Interferometer,

Abstract

A Wollaston prism Schlieren-Interferometer is described and analyzed. This Schlieren-Interferometer is a standard single pass Schlieren system with the knife edge replaced by a polarizer-Wollaston prism-analyzer combination. The analysis of the optical system shows that a fringe shift on the viewing screen is related to a density change. The effects of the polarizer, Wollaston prism, and analyzer are included in the analysis. The double image, which is characteristic of a Wollaston prism, and its influence on interferogram interpretation is discussed. It is shown that the fringe shift may be related to a density gradient under certain special conditions. The experimental procedures developed for the use of this instrument are briefly reviewed.
