Impact Deflection Estimators from Single Wind Measurements.

Abstract

A statistical examination is made of the power law formula currently in use to extrapolate a wind profile from a single measurement near the surface to the burnout altitude of the M50 Honest John rocket (400 mil Q.E.) for the purpose of obtaining low-level wind corrections to the launcher settings. Two new statistical wind displacement estimators are developed which provide from 40% to 60% reduction in dispersion due to low-level wind based on simulated rocket trajectories utilizing actual wind profiles.
