Inshore Sea Surface Temperature and Salinity Conditions at Agate Beach, Yaquina Bay and Whale Cove, Oregon, in 1970.

Abstract

Daily temperature and salinity conditions measured in the surf at Agate Beach, Oregon, are given and summarized by 15 day periods, with the range, mean and standard deviation of each period indicated. Conditions in 1970 are briefly compared to those observed in 1968 and 1969, and temperature measurements at this station summarized for 15 day periods is figured for the period 1967-1970. Water and near surface air temperatures at a station 3 miles inside Yaquina Bay measured at the daily four tidal extremes are tabulated. A system for continuously recording temperature from a thermistor chain installed in the intertidal is described. The design and construction of thermistor pressure cases, thermistor shielding, and a dual range Wheatstone Bridge are described and figured. Data recorded from intertidal thermistor chain installed at Whale Cove, Oregon, at the four daily tidal extremes are given. These data are compared to those from Agate Beach, 10 miles away, and it is concluded that there is poor correlation between the two locations due to hydrographic and topographic differences.
