Asbestos and Surface Treated Asbestos as Reinforcing Agents for Thermoplastics and Rubbers.

Abstract

Polystyrene, polypropylene, nylon and seven different rubbers have been filled with asbestos and organoderivatives of asbestos. The mechanical properties of the three thermoplastics were improved by adding asbestos but no further improvement was gained by using treated asbestos. Infrared spectroscopy gave evidence of any chemical bonding between the reinforcing filler and matrix. Asbestos can be used to reinforce five of the rubbers but the surface treatment which will bring about improved properties. (Author-PL)
