FITIT, A Computer Program to Least Squares Fit Non-Linear Theories.

Abstract

This report describes the FORTRAN IV computer program, FITIT, which fits arbitrary non-linear theoretical functions by the method of least squares. Given a set of measurements and given a theoretical expression which is a function of a few unknown parameters, the program simultaneously adjusts the parameters to determine their values which allow the function to best fit the data. The report describes in detail the mathematical methods of the fitting procedure and discusses the program's operation. The report concludes with two example problems which will serve as a guide for the individual user in adapting FITIT to his own needs. (Author)
