Spillway, Millers Ferry Lock and Dam, Alabama River, Alabama.

Abstract

The model of the gated spillway, constructed to an undistorted scale of 1:50, reproduced one 50-ft-wide gate bay and approximately half of each adjacent gate bay. The general purpose of the model study was to determine the flow characteristics over the spillway and to verify the adequacy of the stilling basin design. Tests revealed that flow separated from the downstream face of the original gate sill and a parabolic shape was added in order to guide flow into the stilling basin. The spillway rating curves were determined with full and partial gate openings for both gate sill shapes. The stilling basin as originally designed functioned satisfactorily below the curved still shape, but alterations were tested in an effort to reduce construction costs. The altered basins were not as efficient as the original design; therefore, the original design is recommended. (Author)
