The Analysis of Hydrogen - Carbon Ratios in Carbonaceous Residues.

Abstract

Several methods for the analysis of the hydrogen content of carbonaceous material resulting from hydrocarbon pyrolysis were examined. The method of sample conbustion in an oxygen atmosphere and analysis of the hydrogen content by mass spectrometry and carbon dioxide by manometry gives results on a series of replicate rungs with a standard deviation 3.5% on samples in the 1.5 - 8 mgm range. The pyrolysis of naphthalene was studied by the flow system and static methods. Analysis of the products show that there is no splitting of the C-C bond and that hydrogen and polymers of naphthalene are the products of the reaction. The naphthalene polymers are characterized by mass spectrometer and gas chromatogrphy methods. The kinetics data and reaction products can be explained by either a bimolecular or free-radical predominantly homogeneous reaction mechanism. (Author)
