Prospects of Fishery Development for the White Wale in the European North (Perspektivy Razvitiya Promysla Belukhi na Evropeiskom Severe),
Abstract
The first fisheries of white whales were established in the 18th century in the White Sea, Cheshskaya guba, lower reaches of Pechora and off Novaya Zemlya. Their development was, however, slow. Only after World War II did the fisheries of white whales begin to expand. Now they are active, not only in the White Sea, but also in the Barents and Kara Seas. According to latest estimates, the white whale populations are quite large. These estimates are, however, roughly approximate. Systematic aerial reconnaissance must be employed to determine the size of the whale populations by areas and their migration routes. The number of white whales caught in the Soviet Northern Seas has increased from 21 to 1953 to 1333 in 1959. (Author)
