The Dependence of Primary Production on the Composition of Phytoplankton (Zavisimost Pervichnoi Produktsii ot Sostava Fitoplanktona),

Abstract

The dependence of primary production on the composition of phytoplankton is based on special observations carried out in the summer of 1958 in the Ivan'kovskoye, Rybinskoye and Kuybyshevskoye water basins, as well as in certain sectors of the Volga River. In addition to the primary production, the species' composition and the biomass of phytoplankton was determined, the energy of solar light striking the water surface, the temperature and transparency of water. The instruments and methods used are briefly described, illustrating graphically the variations of photosynthesis in various algal groups and the utilization of light energy by various phytoplankton species in the above-mentioned water basins.
