The Current as a Factor Determining the Development of Phytoplankton in Water Basins (Techenie kak Faktor, Opredelyayushchii Razvitie Fitoplanktona v Vodoemye),
Abstract
The paper discusses the composition and distribution of phytoplankton in water basins by taking into consideration the speed of water movement. The study is based on investigations carried out in the Yaroslavl'-Stalingrad sector of the Volga River, in the Kuibyshev and Gor'kov water basins and elsewhere. The plankton composition, before and after the regulation of fluvial waters in the Volga, is described and compared, drawing conclusions concerning the effect exercised by the speed of water movement, the quantity of water involved with the current, and the relative stagnancy of waters in various sectors of water basins and in various seasons of the year.
