Growth Processes of Inorganic Whiskers.
Abstract
A general survey of the growth processes of inorganic whiskers has been made. On the basis of the phases involved, these processes have been divided into nine mechanisms. An example for each of these, along with the brief description of the possible mechanisms, have been given. The state of technology of high strength alpha Al2O3, SiC, and Si3N4 whiskers has also been discussed. It has been emphasized that before the enormous potential of the whiskers can be realized, processes will have to be developed by which whiskers of uniformly high quality and in economical yields can be prepared. Also, techniques must be developed for the complete characterization of these materials. (Author)
