Further Research Into and Validation of the Analytic Profile System for Visual Display Evaluation.

Abstract

The predictive validity of a previously developed instrument for visual display evaluation was investigated. The instrument, the Analytic Profile System, utilizes forced-choice methodology to obtain scores for displays on each of seven scales which have their basis in factor analysis of the observer-display interface. The validity investigation involved: (1) application of the Analytic Profile System to a set of displays, (2) training ten subjects on the use of the displays, and then administering a performance test requiring use of the displays. The correlations between the performance scores for the displays and the Analytic Profile System scores of those displays ranged between .52 and .88. A human engineering checklist was also applied to the displays. The correlation between the checklist scores and the Analytic Profile System was .71. Finally, user reaction to the instrument was sought. Preliminary user reaction seemed to indicate the Analytic Profile System to possess acceptable utility. (Author)
