On the Vacuum Air Missile Boost.

Abstract

A comprehensive study of the concept of the vacuum-air missile boost system is presented. An improved theoretical analysis of the problem of estimating velocities imparted by the system was developed. The analysis is based on the assumption of incompressibility of air and quasi-steady flow conditions. Similitude studies are presented in order to predict information regarding the full scale prototype tube from the data obtained with tests on models. The influence of size of the muzzle chamber on the back pressure was studied and solutions for the case of completely turbulent flow in a tube with large muzzle chamber were presented. A non-dimensional study of the problem was carried out. Critical length curves for different missile weights were obtained and the diameters of the launch tubes for a limiting acceleration of 8 g's were computed. The experimental results were obtained from tests on two laboratory models having 20 ft. long tube diameters of 3 in. and 1 1/4 in. respectively.
