Some Engineering Analysis and Design Aspects of the Duke-ARO-D High Speed Ground Transportation Facility.

Abstract

Structural design aspects of the facility of the U. S. Army Research Office-Durham and Duke University for testing of Vacuum-Air High Speed Ground Transportation Systems are presented. The vacuum-air transportation concept is discussed and the salient features of the ARO-D-Duke facility are described. An analysis of the dynamics of the vehicle motion, based on certain simplifying assumptions, inside the tube to estimate the maximum energy that is imparted to the vehicle inside the tube for a safe design was done. A dynamic analysis of the tube system taking into account the dynamic effect of the loads was also performed. The velocities of the moving vehicle that are likely to induce lateral resonance in the tube were determined theoretically. The agreement between theory and experiments was considered good. It is concluded that the structural design of the tube facility is safe if three additional things are done. Recommendations of design improvements making the structural design of the facility completely safe for all future proposed tests were made. (Author)
