A 'Lightcast' Amputation Stump Socket. A Preliminary Report on the Direct Forming of a Stump Socket Using a New Orthopaedic Casting Material,

Abstract

Direct forming of a stump socket using a new orthopedic casting material is reported. The 'lightcast' material consists of a fiberglass fabric, a polypropylene stockinet and an UV lamp. Both the fiberglass bandages and the stockinet are provided in the usual orthopedic sizes and widths. The fiberglass bandages are impregnated with an unsaturated polyester resin which has been treated to begin its polymerization but has been interrupted part way to completion and is packaged in that state. The 'lightcast' materials appear feasible for the rapid production of amputation stump sockets. (P.S.-PL)
