A Low Power Brushless dc Motor.

Abstract

The Report describes a complete brushless dc motor of fractional horsepower which could be engineered to fulfil the majority of space motor roles. The Report deals primarily with a versatile active commutator which would have high reliability and efficiency, and which can be adapted to any type of permanent magnet rotor machine. The commutator is also designed to be compatible with various systems for controlling speed, torque and direction of rotation. Various windings and commutating systems are discussed to reduce the effect of cogging. Motor sizes from 08 to 15 have been developed. Typical size 11 performance figures are: an efficiency of 60% at 1/4 watt shaft power at a speed of 2500 rpm. (Author)
