Test and Evaluation of 20 to 30 KW Xenon Arc Lamps Summary January 1969 to February 1970.

Abstract

The high pressure xenon compact arc lamp has proven to be an excellent radiation source for searchlights, solar simulators, and other applications where a precise distribution of high intensity visible or infrared radiation is required. The purpose of the work reported was to test lamps of 20 to 30 KW rating supplied by various manufacturers and determine both their performance and their reliability. Performance was determined through measurements of the radiant output, brightness distribution, efficiency, and other parameters which define how well the lamp will satisfy the requirements of a given searchlight system. Reliability was determined by operation of the lamp over a long period of time and measurement of the rate of change of performance with time, along with a monitoring of other variables such as heat transfer efficiency at the anode which give a measure of lamp deterioration. Catastrophic failure of a lamp can usually be predicted from these indications of deterioration. (Author)
