Correlation of Sea Surface Roughness with Microwave Radiometric Temperature.

Abstract

A series of microwave measurements of the vertically polarized radiometric brightness temperature of the sea surface was analyzed for correlation to observed sea surface roughness. The ratio of the measured brightness temperature to the calculated specular temperature was used as a roughness parameter. This roughness parameter, when least squares fit to a linear equation having the swell height and wind chop height as independent variables, showed a predominant dependency on chop height and a negligible dependency on swell height. The maximum sensitivity of the roughness parameter was noted to occur at incident observation angles of 78 to 79 degrees, which occurs close to the Brewster angle of 82.5 degrees. The dependency of the roughness parameter on the chop height was minimized in the observation angle range of 60 to 64 degrees, which compares well with theoretical predictions of a sea surface roughness invariant angle by other investigators.
