Lock Filling and Emptying System, Holt Lock and Dam, Warrior River, Alabama; Hydraulic Model Investigation.

Abstract

A 1:25-scale model was used to confirm the adequacy of the proposed floor lateral culverts, filling and emptying system. A 1:15-scale model of the reverse tainter culvert valve was used to determine loads and load variations on the valve moisting mechanism and means of reducing these loads. A 1:15-scale model of the reverse tainter culvert valve was used to determine loads and load variations on the valve hoisting mechanism and means of reducing these loads. The adopted filling and emptying system included 12 lateral culverts with 10 ports each, centered in the lock, alternating from the two longitudinal culverts, and covering about 28 percent of the chamber length. The lock can be filled in 11 min and emptied in 12.6 min with hawser stresses not exceeding 5 tons. A split-lateral system was also investigated. (Author)
