Preparation of Samples for X-Ray Powder Diffractometry Using a Hydrophobic Amorphous Silica.

Abstract

A novel procedure for preparing powder samples for use in an x-ray powder diffractometer has been developed. The crystalline material is ground in the presence of a hydrophobic silica aerogel and then pressed into pellets at 10,000 psi. The advantages of this procedure are: The silica aerogel functions as a grinding aid, improving the grinding of the material; The powder is relatively hydrophobic and not easily affected by atmospheric moisture; and The pellet formed is very flat and has a high density of randomly oriented crystallites per unit area.
