Graphite Fusion and Vaporization,

Abstract

An analysis is conducted to establish the bounds of the carbon solid-liquidus-vapor phase diagram. Included in the analysis is an assessment of the graphite triple-point experiments. Results of the analysis indicate that the triple-point experimental data are in error by as much as 600K. Correspondence of the sublimation and fusion of graphite is obtained; the calculated results remove much of the disparity between triple-point temperatures and sublimation temperatures reported in the literature and provide definition of the liquid-vaporization pressure-temperature relation for graphite. These quantities are then utilized to describe the extent of their influence on nose tip surface recession and thermal response of a high-performance re-entry vehicle. (Author)
