Approximate Solutions to Some Static and Dynamic Optimal Structural Design Problems,

Abstract

Considered in this paper are problems of optimal structural design for minimum static deflection, minimum dynamic deflection, maximum fundamental frequency, and maximum stability. A procedure based on the Ritz method is proposed which yields approximate solutions to these problems when the design is characterized by a discrete set of design parameters. Examples involving elastic beams and rods are presented to demonstrate the applicability and efficiency of the procedure. (Author)
