Three-Dimensional Seismic Ray Tracing in a Laterally Heterogeneous Spherical Earth

Abstract

It is the purpose of this study to present a basic, computer-oriented method of tracing seismic rays, either for P or S waves, propagating through a laterally heterogeneous spherical earth. This method is especially designed to consider a class of lateral seismic heterogeneities related to sea-floor spreading and global tectonics, e.g., the deep structure beneath mid-oceanic ridges and island arcs, the sources and sinks, respectively, in a system of drifting lithospheric plates.
