Abstract

The history, organization, activities and achievements of the Soviet Arctic Institute are summarized, emphasizing the scientific investigations whose major objective is to widen the knowledge of Arctic seas and lands. In line with this, new methods in Arctic navigation, ice forecasting and ship designing have been devised and tested. (Author)
