Fluctuations of Iciness in the Baltic Sea and the Danish Straits (Kolebaniya Ledovitosti Baltiiskogo Morya I Datskikh Prolivov),

Abstract

On the basis of secular series of observations on ice in the Baltic Sea and Danish Straits from 1529 to 1958, the trend of long-period fluctuations of iciness in the areas has been determined. The trend made possible the forecasting of the march of iciness in the Baltic Sea and Danish Straits for the following decades. Also the relation between fluctuations in iciness and the probability of winters with various degrees of severity was determined. On the basis of this relation it is possible to calculate the probability of occurrence of winters of various types from the long-period variations of sea ice. (Author)
