Salt Exchange Through the Danish Straits and Its Influence on Multiannual Fluctuations of Salinity in the Baltic Sea (Soleobmen Cherez Datskie Prolivy i ego Vliyanie na Mnogoletnie Kolebaniya Solenosti Baltiiskago Morya),

Abstract

The author has computed the yearly magnitudes of salt exchange through the Danish Straits for the period 1920 through 1939. The computation is based on earlier data concerning the water exchange through the straits, and on systematic observations of salinity at two floating lighthouses. These were located on the border between the straits and the southwestern part of the Baltic Sea: i.e. at Gedser-Rev (on the Darser Ridge) and at Drogden (on the Drogden Ridge). The analysis of annual movement of salt through the strait during the thirties shows a systematic decrease in the amount of exchanged salt with the dominant movement of salt being from the North Sea into the Baltic. This work points out that this movement combined with other causes, has had a substantial influence on the increase of salinity in the Baltic Sea starting in 1930. Furthermore, it is stated that the multichannel movement of water and salt exchanges is linked with the character of atmospheric circulation over Europe. (Author)
