The Present Status of Knowledge Concerning the Primary Production of the Ocean (Sovremennoe Sostoyanie Izucheniya Pervichnoi Produktsii Okeana),

Abstract

The paper contains a comprehensive summary of the development and present status of the Soviet and foreign investigations dealing with the primary production of the World Ocean. The various methods used in measuring the production, such as the oxygen, radio carbon, and chlorophyll methods are analysed, pointing out their advantages and limitations. In connection with it, the significance and nature of photosynthesis in the production process is analysed. The relationship between lighting conditions and quantity of production is determined, indicating the significance of mineral particles, phytoplankton and zooplankton in the vegetation process which varies by hours, seasons, geographical locations and depth and is also affected by the vertical and horizontal movement of waters, their intermixing and other factors.
