The Barents Sea. The White Sea (Barentsovo More. Beloe More),

Abstract

The effect of the warm Nordkapp Current on the general pattern of vertical and horizontal water circulation, temperature and ice regime in various sections of the Barents Sea is discussed with a view to expounding the composition and quantitative distribution of fauna and flora in the sea, which forms an intermediate stage between the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. The water regime of the White Sea, which is determined mainly by the climate of the region and the continental runoff is compared with the regime of the Barents Sea affected by the warm Nordkapp Current. The differences between the fauna and flora of the water basins are analyzed, pointing out the typical specimens and variations in species inhabiting the White Sea which has a higher salinity and lower water temperature than the Barents Sea.
