On the Prospects of Using the Interferometer for the Determination of Salinity of Sea Water (O Vozmozhnosti Primeneniya Interferometra dlya Opredeleniya Solenosti Morskoi Vody),

Abstract

The small Soviet produced interferometer ITR-2 (weight 15 kg), which is based on the German model designed by the Optics Department of the Institute of Physics and Technique, is outlined, describing its operation and analyzing the degree of accuracy in determining the salinity of sea water. The eadings of the instrument are compared with titration results so as to determine the most accurate calibration standard for salinity measurements in oceans and seas. The advantages of the instrument, such as the simplicity of operation (even at sea state 5), the accessibility, compactness and ruggedness of the instrument are pointed out, as well as the need for additional experiments to raise the accuracy of measurements beyond that of titration.
